When we first thought of spending New Year’s Eve in Morocco’ camel tours, the idea evoked romantic notions of a luxurious tent, starry skies, warm breezes, and candlelight. Who wouldn’t want to spend a magical night in the folds of this mystical desert?

We begin our new year in Morocco trip to Merzouga, at the Erg Chebbi dunes, along the Algerian border. These giant hills of smooth sand are famous for their great height and size and are one of the greatest sights of Morocco.  Historically, getting to the dunes was incredibly challenging, as travelers had to pass through some of the flattest and most barren areas imaginable as they followed the Saharan Caravan Route to carry salts, gold, slaves, and spices to Timbuktu. We can also customize the new year’ eve in Morocco differently if you wish to.

1st day of the easter vacation in Morocco,

MARCH 24 : FROM MARRAKECH TO DADES GORGES EASTER VACATION

Departure from Marrakech to Dades Valley, in the High Atlas. During this tour of great beauty, we can contemplate the mountain of Tizi n’Tichka with 2.260m of altitude. A route of stark contrasts which also allow us to see the many Berber villages which sit on hillsides. Mandatory stop to visit the beautiful village of Ait Ben Haddou, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and famous for being the setting for several films including Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Gladiator (2000), and The Jewel of Cleopatra Nile, among others. Also, visit a women’s cooperative dedicated to the marketing of the famous Argan oil. We will continue the route passing through Ouarzazate and the breathtaking Valley of Roses. Arrive at Dades Valley red. Dinner and overnight.

2nd day of the easter vacation in Morocco

MARCH 25 : FROM DADES GORGES TO MERZOUGA DESERT

Morning departure to the desert and visit the Todra Gorge, about 15 km from Tinghir. Lunch. In the afternoon, departure to Erfoud through the palm Tourouq. Erfoud visit a workshop production of marble fossils. We continue towards the impressive dunes of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga. Once there we can contemplate an unforgettable sunset from the high dune, which arrive on the backs of camels. Unforgettable night resting in authentic Berber haimas under the beautiful starry sky of the desert. Dinner and accommodation in Haima camp in the dunes of Merzouga.

3rd day of the easter vacation in Morocco

MARCH 26 : MERZOUGA – ERG CHEBBI SAND DUNES

Early risers can enjoy a wonderful sight it is to see the sunrise in the dunes. And after a good breakfast, we will have an excursion to the beautiful seasonal lake Dayet Srji, migration season that hosts hundreds of pink flamingos and wild ducks. We continue to the village of slaves, where we shall hear its century music and enjoy watching “Dancing Camel”. On the way to the desert we will see some typical local villages and visit a nomadic family that take tea. Dinner and overnight.

4th day of the easter vacation in Morocco

MARCH 27 : FROM MERZOUGA DESERT TO OUARZAZATE

Breakfast and departure to Ouarzazate. We begin the route through the vast palm grove of Tafilalet and Rissani, capital of the former sultans “alaouite”. Visit to its famous market and parking donkeys. We will continue to Ouarzazate by the impressive Draa Valley, through the Berber village of Agdz and Ait Port Saoun of 1,660 m. Arrival in Ouarzazate. Dinner and overnight.

5th day of the easter vacation in Morocco

MARCH 28: FROM OUARZAZATTE TO MARRAKECH

Departure to Marrakech. The route today we will be surprised to see one of the hidden beauties of the High Atlas: Ounila Valley. Continuation of the route to Marrakech through the mountain pass of Tizi-n’Tichka, passing the famous Kasbah of the Pasha El Glaoui. The building was home to T’hami the Glaoui and his family, governor of Marrakech in the early twentieth century. Arrival in Marrakech and transfer to the airport at the appointed time.

DAY 28/12: MARRAKECH – TODRA GORGE

We start our new year in Morocco tour after we leave Marrakech via Col Tichka crossing Ouarzazate. And we will discover the village of Skoura (42 km), located in the heart of the valley of the palm trees. We will take a stroll through the oasis, whose exuberant vegetation enhances the image of the Kasbahs. From here we will make an excursion to the gorges of Dades. Afterward, we will cross the banks of Boulmane, where a road marked with kasbahs and ksour opens and whose landscape is ocher, red, and mauve. Around us we will find rocky plateaus where the camels graze. After a journey full of ksour, oasis and palm trees we will reach Tineghir, perched at 1,350 m altitude and surrounded by a palm grove, sleeping in the riad.

DAY 29/12: TODRA GORGE – ERFOUD – ERG CHEBBI – MERZOUGA

We will visit the gorges of the Todgha. It has canyons that reach 300 m of height. Once you have visited this spectacular landscape, we will go to the village of Tinejdad to reach the ksar of Touroug, surrounded by beautiful oasis. Shortly afterward we will enter the palm grove of Jorf that progresses non-stop to Erfoud where the best dates of the country are collected. Finally the desert appears, with voluptuous dunes, and fine golden sands.

We arrive at the dunes of Erg Chebbi where the camels are waiting for us to spend the night in the haimas camp.

DAY 30/12: ERG CHEBBI-ERG OUZINA

Today it will be a 100% desert day. plan to get up early to enjoy a unique experience. To contemplate the majestic sunrise in the desert, a show of light and silence. After dawn and after breakfast, we return back to the hotel To take a shower and go out again with our 4×4 to travel around the desert and its villages: the Valley of Ouzina, for later and again by road, head to visit the village of Khamilia, known as the town of blacks, And inhabited by descendants of the former slaves from sub-Saharan Africa, who will offer us a sample of their culture while we taste delicious tea.

After the visit we will continue to Merzouga, a small settlement located at the foot of the reddish sand dunes of Erg Ouzina and where the charming hotel where we will spend the night, facing the dunes.

DAY 31/12: DESERT OUZINA

Today, quiet day to climb the dunes and visit the village of Ouzina, the oasis of Ramlia and then return to watch the sunset from the great dune of the Erg Ouzina. Afterward, we will go down to the hotel to prepare the party of the end of the year: a typical dinner of lamb of the oven, music of the charges and berbere, bonfire …

DAY 01/01: OUZINA DESERT – DRAA VALLEY – OUARZAZATE

This itinerary crosses the famous tarmac road of Paris Dakar until reaching the Saharan regions south of the Djebel Sagho. Then we will go towards Mcessi until we reach the asphalt that leads to Alnif, a road that rises through a desert landscape. Then we will reach the village of Mcessi, lost in the heart of the black desert. After Alnif, we will reach the palm grove of Tazzarine. We will cross beautiful villages that adjoin the Djebel Tizouguirine, and pass through the NKob villages where we will take a panoramic view of the Kasbah, from Tansikht, and join the valley of the Draa, where there is an immense snake of greenery of about 250 km Desert that will lead us to downtown in the palm grove.

DAY 02/01: OUARZAZATE-KASBAH AIT BENHADDOU-KASBAH TELOUET-MARRAKECH

We leave the Hollywood of Morocco to visit the famous kasbahs Ait Benhaddou, a jewel of the region, declared a world heritage by UNESCO. It is a fortified village with beautiful crenelated and decorated towers, one of the most beautiful in the Glaua region and finally, we will return to Marrakech crossing Talouet and the Tiz-in-Tichka neck, through the heart of the Atlas. And we will end our new year in the Morocco tour.
