Fes to Merzouga Round Trip: Day-by-Day Itinerary
The itinerary crosses the Middle Atlas from Fes to Merzouga on day one and returns by the same route on day two.
Fes to Merzouga via Ifrane, Azrou, Midelt and the Ziz Gorges
Day 1 is the drive from Fes across the Middle Atlas to Merzouga, followed by a camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset and a night in a desert camp.
You're collected from your accommodation in Fes at 7:30 am. The road climbs through the Middle Atlas to Ifrane, a town the Moroccan National Tourist Office says is
"aptly nicknamed ‘Little Moroccan Swiss’"— Moroccan National Tourist Office (Visit Morocco), See & Do: nature
then continues through Azrou, Midelt and the Ziz Gorges, where the landscape turns to desert. In Merzouga you switch to camels, ride up to the high dunes for sunset, and spend the night in nomad tents at the camp.
Merzouga to Fes via the Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas
Day 2 starts with sunrise over the dunes and a camel ride back to a hotel at the edge of the desert for a shower and breakfast, then the drive back to Fes.
The Moroccan National Tourist Office describes Merzouga as
"one of the gates of the Sahara"— Moroccan National Tourist Office (Visit Morocco), Errachidia-Midelt-Merzouga
The return follows the Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas, with an optional stop in the cedar forest near Azrou to see the Barbary macaques, and passes Ifrane before reaching Fes.
Erg Chebbi Overnight in a Desert Camp
The only overnight on this tour is one night in nomad tents at an equipped desert camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes; there is no hotel night.
Dinner is at the camp. On the morning of day two you ride back to a hotel at the edge of the desert, where you can shower and have breakfast before the drive to Fes. The camp standard for your date is confirmed with your quote; more about camps on our Merzouga desert page.
