Fes to Sahara Desert Tour: Day-by-Day Itinerary
The itinerary heads south from Fes to the Sahara in two days, west through the valleys and over the High Atlas to Marrakech, then north along the Atlantic to Rabat and back to Fes via Volubilis and Meknes.
Fes to Midelt via Ifrane and Azrou
Day 1 is the drive from Fes through the Middle Atlas to Midelt, with stops in Ifrane and Azrou.
You leave Fes at 8 am. Near Azrou you may see Barbary macaques in the cedar forest, and lunch is in the small town of Zaïda before you reach Midelt for the night.
Midelt to Merzouga and a night in the Erg Chebbi dunes
Day 2 is the drive from Midelt to Merzouga via Errachidia and Rissani, followed by a camel ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes and a night in a Berber tent.

Your camel guide meets you there for a ride of about two hours across the dunes, timed around sunset. Dinner is served in the camp with Berber music.
Merzouga to the Dadès Gorges via Rissani and the Todra Gorge
Day 3 is the drive from Merzouga to the Dadès Gorges, via Rissani's traditional souk and a short walk in the Todra Gorge.
After sunrise you return by camel for breakfast and a shower, then pass the Tafilalet palm groves to Rissani and its old market, including the livestock souk. Lunch is near the Todra Gorge before you continue to the Dadès Gorges.
Dadès Valley to Aït Ben Haddou via Skoura and Ouarzazate
Day 4 is the drive along the Valley of Roses and the Skoura oasis to Ouarzazate and on to Aït Ben Haddou, where you stay the night.
Aït Ben Haddou was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. UNESCO describes it as
"a striking example of the architecture of southern Morocco."— UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou
Aït Ben Haddou to Marrakech via Telouet and the Tizi n'Tichka
Day 5 is a morning visit to the Kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou, a detour to the partly ruined Telouet Kasbah, and the crossing of the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Marrakech.
You arrive in Marrakech later in the day.
Marrakech to Rabat via Casablanca
Day 6 is the drive north from Marrakech to Casablanca for sightseeing and lunch, then on to Rabat for the night.
In Casablanca you see Mohammed V Square, United Nations Square and the Hassan II Mosque on the seafront. In Rabat, Morocco's capital, you visit the Kasbah of the Udayas and the Hassan Tower. Rabat is a UNESCO World Heritage site, listed as "Rabat, Modern Capital and Historic City".
Rabat to Fes via Volubilis and Meknes
Day 7 is the return to Fes, via the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the imperial city of Meknes.

In Meknes, the city of Sultan Moulay Ismail and a UNESCO World Heritage site, you visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, its gardens and the Bab Mansour gate before arriving in Fes.
