A Private Toubkal Trek with Preparation and Recovery Built In

This private Toubkal tour gives you two days of preparatory walking before the ascent, a guided refuge-and-summit option for fit travelers, and two recovery nights in Ouirgane afterwards, with a lodge-based valleys alternative for anyone who prefers not to climb.

Quick overview

  • Route and nights: Marrakech (2), Imlil (2), Toubkal refuge (1), Imlil (1), Ouirgane (2), Marrakech (1).
  • Difficulty: moderate on the preparatory walks; demanding on the refuge and summit days.
  • Estimated walking times: roughly 5 to 6 hours to the refuge; a long summit day with a substantial descent. All times are estimates, verified for your route and season.
  • Accommodation: riad in Marrakech; mountain lodge or guesthouse in Imlil and Ouirgane; basic shared refuge.
  • Two options: the Toubkal ascent, or the valleys alternative with extra lodge nights.

The trip is planned by Hakim and Aziz, family members from Merzouga who lead Moroccan Desert Trips and have each worked in tourism for more than 15 years. They arrange your transport, accommodation and local mountain guides; on the mountain, decisions about routes and conditions rest with your guide.

Summit or Valleys: Which Option Is Right for You?

Choose the Toubkal ascent if you are a fit, experienced hill walker comfortable with long, steep days and basic shared accommodation; choose the valleys alternative if you want the High Atlas scenery without the altitude, the refuge or the summit day.

Toubkal ascent option

Includes the refuge night (Day 5) and the summit attempt with the long descent to Imlil (Day 6). Demanding walking and basic shared accommodation.

Who it suits

Travelers with good fitness, experience of long hill-walking days, and confidence on rocky, uneven and steep terrain. Previous multi-day walking is helpful.

Valleys alternative

Replaces the refuge and summit stages with two more lodge-based nights in Imlil and guided valley walks suited to your group, such as village paths in the Aït Mizane and Imnane valleys.

Overnights

Marrakech 2 · Imlil 4 · Ouirgane 2 · Marrakech 1

Who it suits

Walkers who want the mountains, villages and views without the altitude of the summit slopes, the refuge or a very long day.

Accommodation and pricing for this option are confirmed in your quotation.

How do we choose, and what if our group splits?

Tell us your preferred option when you enquire; the Day 4 briefing is a chance to confirm it with your guide. If members of your private party choose different options, those not climbing can stay at the Imlil lodge on Days 5 and 6. Separate guided walks for them would need an additional guide, which we can request but do not promise until it is confirmed in your quotation.

Experience Highlights and Your 10 Days at a Glance

The journey moves from mountain preparation and village landscapes around Imlil, to the refuge and optional summit attempt, to rest in Ouirgane.

  • Mountain preparation: two guided walks from Imlil, including a possible pass, to help you adjust before going higher.
  • Village landscapes: terraced fields, walnut groves and earth-built Amazigh villages along the way.
  • The refuge experience: a simple, shared night high in the mountains, among other trekkers.
  • The optional summit attempt: a pre-dawn start toward North Africa's highest peak, with your guide deciding what conditions allow.
  • Ouirgane recovery: two quiet nights to rest before returning to the city.

Toubkal Ascent & High Atlas Valleys, Day by Day

This is the ascent option's day-by-day route; on the valleys alternative, Days 5 and 6 become guided valley walks with nights at the Imlil lodge.

Day 1

Arrival in Marrakech

Day 1 is a relaxed arrival: a private airport transfer to your riad and time to settle in.

Your driver meets you at Marrakech Airport and takes you to your riad. Rest after the flight, have tea in the courtyard and, if there is time, wander toward the medina or watch the sunset from the roof.

Key experiences

  • Private airport transfer (included as agreed)
  • Time to rest

Pace: Arrival day; nothing scheduled.

Overnight: Marrakech

Day 2

Marrakech at a Comfortable Pace

Day 2 combines a little cultural discovery with plenty of rest before the mountains.

Explore a selection of the medina's sights and craft quarters, with a licensed city guide if included in your quotation, then rest in the afternoon. It is worth arriving in the mountains fresh rather than tired from a long city day.

Key experiences

  • Guided medina introduction (if included)
  • Afternoon rest

Pace: Short, easy city walking.

Overnight: Marrakech

Day 3

Marrakech to Imlil and First Preparatory Walk

Day 3 takes you into the High Atlas to Imlil, where you meet your mountain team and take a first walk suited to your arrival time, fitness and the conditions.

Drive through the foothills to Imlil and settle into your lodge or guesthouse. Meet your local mountain guide, then set out on a first walk on the paths around the village. It is a chance for the guide to see how you move on mountain terrain and for your body to start adjusting to the elevation.

Key experiences

  • Private transfer to Imlil (included)
  • Meet your mountain guide
  • First preparatory walk

Pace: Roughly 1.5 hours of driving (estimate), then a moderate walk.

Overnight: Imlil

Day 4

Second Acclimatization Walk near Imlil

Day 4 is a longer preparatory walk, potentially over a nearby pass, chosen by your guide according to conditions and your ability, followed by equipment checks and an ascent briefing.

Walk higher and longer than the day before, possibly crossing a pass above the Imlil valleys, then descend to sleep lower at Imlil. Back at the lodge, your guide checks footwear, clothing and any seasonal equipment and briefs you on the refuge and summit days, so everyone can decide whether to take the ascent option.

Key experiences

  • Longer guided preparatory walk (route chosen by the guide)
  • Equipment check
  • Ascent briefing and final decision

Pace: A full walking day; demanding in places.

Overnight: Imlil

Day 5

Optional Trek to the Toubkal Refuge

Day 5 begins the demanding mountain option: a sustained ascent of roughly 5 to 6 hours (estimate) to the Toubkal refuge, where you spend the night in basic shared accommodation.

Walk up the Aït Mizane Valley past Aremd and the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch, then continue climbing steadily toward the refuge below the summit slopes. Mules typically carry overnight bags on this trail, and you walk with a daypack. At the refuge, expect simple shared sleeping areas and facilities, shared with other trekkers, and an early night.

Key experiences

  • Guided trek to the refuge (ascent option)
  • Mule support for overnight bags (as arranged)
  • Night at the refuge in basic shared accommodation

Pace: Demanding: sustained uphill walking on rocky paths, roughly 5 to 6 hours (estimate, to be verified for your route and season).

Overnight: Toubkal refuge (ascent option)

Day 6

Optional Toubkal Summit Attempt and Descent to Imlil

Day 6 is the long summit day: an early start, a demanding climb toward the summit, then a lengthy descent all the way back to Imlil.

Leave the refuge before dawn and climb steep, rocky ground toward the summit with your guide. Whether you continue to the top depends on the weather, trail conditions, your guide's assessment and each person's health and fitness on the day; summiting is never guaranteed. From the high point you reach, descend to the refuge and then on down the valley to Imlil, a long descent that tests tired legs.

Key experiences

  • Early start with your mountain guide
  • Summit attempt, subject to conditions and guide assessment
  • Long descent to Imlil

Pace: Very demanding: a long day of steep ascent and descent; timings confirmed before departure.

Overnight: Imlil

Day 7

Imlil to Ouirgane

Day 7 is a short transfer to the quieter valley of Ouirgane for rest and a change of pace; any walking is optional.

After a late breakfast, drive down to Ouirgane. Settle in and rest; if your legs feel ready, take a short optional walk nearby.

Key experiences

  • Private transfer to Ouirgane (included)
  • Optional short walk
  • Rest

Pace: Short drive, roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour (estimate).

Overnight: Ouirgane

Day 8

Recovery Day in Ouirgane

Day 8 is a full recovery day, with an optional gentle walk among orchards or villages if you have the energy.

Sleep in, read, enjoy the valley and let your body recover. A gentle orchard or village walk can be arranged for those who want to stretch their legs. Facilities such as pools or spa treatments are mentioned only where your chosen accommodation confirms them.

Key experiences

  • Optional gentle orchard or village walk
  • Free day

Pace: Rest day.

Overnight: Ouirgane

Day 9

Ouirgane to Marrakech

Day 9 is an unhurried return to Marrakech for a final riad night.

Enjoy a slow morning before the drive back to the city. The afternoon and evening are yours.

Key experiences

  • Private transfer to Marrakech (included)
  • Free afternoon and evening

Pace: Roughly 1 to 1.5 hours of driving (estimate).

Overnight: Marrakech

Day 10

Departure

Day 10 ends with a private transfer to Marrakech Airport, timed to your flight.

Your driver takes you to the airport with a comfortable buffer.

Key experiences

  • Private departure transfer (included as agreed)

Pace: Timing depends on your flight.

No overnight included

How Demanding Is the Toubkal Ascent?

The refuge and summit stages require good fitness, sustained uphill walking and confidence on uneven mountain terrain.

What to understand before choosing the ascent

  • Altitude: the preparatory walks support acclimatization but do not guarantee protection from altitude illness, and being fit does not remove altitude-related risks.
  • The summit day: it includes both a steep ascent and a substantial descent back to Imlil.
  • Walking times: every time on this page is an estimate, not a guarantee.
  • Seasonal snow and ice: these can change the equipment, skills and guiding required.
  • Guide decisions: your guide may change the route, postpone an attempt or turn back if conditions or anyone's health require it.

Altitude and your health

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk of altitude illness depends on the altitude reached and the rate of ascent, and symptoms usually begin within hours of arriving at a higher elevation,

“often during or after the first night.”

— CDC Yellow Book, High-Altitude Travel and Altitude Illness

That is one reason the refuge night matters. Seek individual medical advice before booking, especially if you have a heart or lung condition or have had altitude illness before, and tell your guide immediately if you feel unwell.

The ascent is not easy, not suitable for everyone, and not guaranteed to be achievable after two preparatory walks.

Where Will We Stay?

You stay in a comfortable riad in Marrakech, a mountain lodge or guesthouse in Imlil and Ouirgane, and one night in basic shared accommodation at the Toubkal refuge on the ascent option.

Marrakech riad

A courtyard riad with the comforts of the city before and after the mountains.

Mountain lodges and guesthouses

Facilities range from comfortable lodges to simpler guesthouses. Bathrooms may be private or shared, heating varies, and some Imlil properties are reached on foot. We confirm bedding, washing facilities, toilets, heating and room arrangements for each before you book.

The Toubkal refuge

The refuge is basic and shared with other trekkers. Expect shared sleeping areas, shared washrooms and toilets, simple meals and limited comfort. Private guiding and transport do not mean private rooms or exclusive facilities here.

How Should We Prepare?

Prepare with regular long walks on hilly ground, broken-in boots, warm layers and travel insurance that covers trekking at the altitudes you will reach.

Fitness

Build up to several consecutive days of long hill walks with sustained climbs and descents in the months before you travel.

Footwear and clothing

Bring broken-in walking boots with good grip and ankle support, and layers for wide temperature swings: a warm insulating jacket, hat and gloves for the summit day, a waterproof shell, and sun protection.

Daypack and luggage

Carry a daypack with water, snacks and layers. Main luggage stays at your Imlil lodge during the refuge stage, and overnight bags travel by mule where arranged.

Equipment checks

Your guide checks your kit on Day 4 and advises on any seasonal equipment, such as crampons or an ice axe, which may need to be rented.

Insurance and access rules

Choose insurance that explicitly covers trekking at the altitude you will reach, including mountain rescue. Local rules on guiding for the Toubkal trail are reported to require trekkers to be accompanied by a local guide; we confirm the current requirements before your trip.

Toubkal Ascent & High Atlas Valleys FAQs

The ascent is optional, demanding and never guaranteed, the refuge is basic and shared, and a lodge-based valleys alternative is always available.

When is the best season for the Toubkal ascent?

Late spring through early autumn usually offers the most straightforward conditions, but every season brings its own considerations. Midsummer can be hot in the valleys; from late autumn to spring, snow and ice are possible on the upper slopes, which changes the equipment, skills and guiding needed. We assess the season with you before booking.

What happens if there is snow on the mountain?

Snow and ice can make the ascent more technical and may require crampons, an ice axe and the skills to use them. Your guide decides whether the ascent is appropriate and what equipment is needed; in some conditions the summit attempt may be postponed or replaced with the valleys alternative.

What are the refuge facilities like?

Basic and shared. Expect shared sleeping areas, shared washrooms and simple meals, used by other trekkers as well; private guiding does not mean a private room. Exact bedding, washing and heating arrangements are confirmed before you book.

Will the altitude affect me?

It might, even if you are fit. Preparatory walks help your body adjust but cannot rule out altitude illness. Speak to your doctor before booking, and tell your guide at once if you feel unwell on the mountain.

How long is the summit day?

Long: an early pre-dawn start, a steep ascent and a lengthy descent all the way back to Imlil. Exact timings depend on conditions and pace and are confirmed before departure; treat any figure as an estimate.

How do we choose the valleys alternative?

Tell us when you book, or decide after the Day 4 briefing where arrangements allow. The valleys alternative replaces the refuge and summit stages with two more nights in Imlil and guided valley walks; accommodation and pricing are confirmed in your quotation.

Can you cater for dietary requests?

Usually, if we know in advance. Mountain and refuge menus are simple, so we confirm vegetarian, vegan, allergy and other needs with each property and your guide.

What happens if the ascent cannot go ahead?

Your guide offers an alternative. That may mean a lower walk, a rest day or the valleys alternative. We do not promise refunds or rescheduling unless they are stated in your booking terms.
