Casablanca to Fes and Sahara Tour: Day-by-Day Itinerary
The itinerary covers Casablanca and the imperial cities on days 1–3, the Merzouga Sahara on days 4–5, the gorges and kasbahs on days 6–8, Marrakech on days 9–10, and the return to Casablanca on day 11.
Arrival in Casablanca and a guided city tour
Day 1 is your arrival: we meet you at Casablanca airport and take you on a guided tour of the city's main sights before dinner and the night at your hotel.
The Hassan II Mosque is the usual highlight; interior visits follow the mosque's own schedule, and entrance fees are extra.
Casablanca to Fes via Rabat, Meknes and Volubilis
Day 2 is the drive from Casablanca to Fes, with stops in Rabat, the imperial city of Meknes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis.
Rabat and Meknes are UNESCO World Heritage cities (Rabat listing). UNESCO describes Volubilis as
"an important outpost of the Roman Empire"— UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Archaeological Site of Volubilis
It is quoted here because Volubilis is the one Roman site on the route. With four places in one day, each stop is short; you reach Fes in the evening.
Guided day in Fes
Day 3 is a guided day in Fes: the old medina, the Mellah, the Royal Palace gates, the tanneries and the Qarawiyyin, with a panoramic view over the city.
UNESCO notes that Fes has kept its status as
"the country's cultural and spiritual centre."— UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Medina of Fez
That is why this tour gives Fes a full day rather than a stop. The Qarawiyyin and the Royal Palace are seen from outside, and lunch at a local restaurant is at your own cost.
Fes to Merzouga via Ifrane, Azrou and Midelt
Day 4 is the drive from Fes across the Middle Atlas to Merzouga, followed by a camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes and a night at a desert camp.
The Moroccan National Tourist Office says Ifrane is
"aptly nicknamed ‘Little Moroccan Swiss’"— Moroccan National Tourist Office (Visit Morocco), See & Do: nature
You pass Azrou, known for its cedarwood crafts, have lunch in Midelt, and follow the Ziz Valley to Erfoud before the camels take you into the dunes.
A day in the Merzouga desert
Day 5 is a full desert day: a visit to Khamlia to hear Gnawa music, then an afternoon camel ride deeper into the dunes for sunset and a second night at camp.
The Moroccan National Tourist Office calls Merzouga
"one of the gates of the Sahara"— Moroccan National Tourist Office (Visit Morocco), Errachidia-Midelt-Merzouga
Two nights here give you more than a single sunset and sunrise.
Merzouga to the Dadès Valley via Rissani and the Todra Gorge
Day 6 is the drive from Merzouga via Rissani and Tinghir to the Todra Gorge, then on to the Dadès Valley.
An optional walk in the gorge and lunch come before the Dadès Valley, known for its rock formations and kasbahs.
Dadès Valley to Aït Ben Haddou via the Valley of Roses and Ouarzazate
Day 7 follows the Valley of Roses to Ouarzazate, with its film studios and Taourirt Kasbah, and ends at Aït Ben Haddou.
UNESCO describes Aït Ben Haddou as
"a striking example of the architecture of southern Morocco."— UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou
Staying the night lets you see the ksar in the evening light. Studio and kasbah entrance fees are extra.
Aït Ben Haddou to Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka
Day 8 crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Marrakech, where you check in to your hotel near the medina.
First guided day in Marrakech
Day 9 is the first of two full days exploring Marrakech with a private guide.
Across the two days you visit the Majorelle Gardens, the Koutoubia (exterior), the Saadian Tombs, the Bahia Palace and the souks. UNESCO describes the main square as
"Place Jamaâ El Fna, a veritable open-air theatre."— UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Medina of Marrakesh
Second guided day in Marrakech
Day 10 is the second guided day in Marrakech, covering the sights not seen on day 9, with time in the souks and on Jemaa el-Fna.
Entrance fees for the gardens, tombs and palace are paid separately.
Marrakech to Casablanca for your departure
Day 11 is the drive from Marrakech back to Casablanca for your departure, where the tour ends.
Tell us your flight time so we can plan the return transfer; you can also request a Casablanca hotel drop-off instead.
Hotels, Riads and the Merzouga Desert Camp
You spend 10 nights with dinner and breakfast: a hotel in Casablanca, two riad nights in Fes, two nights in a desert camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes, a guesthouse in the Dadès Valley, a riad at Aït Ben Haddou, and three nights in Marrakech.
Exact properties are confirmed with your quote, and you can compare accommodation options when you enquire. No hotel category is guaranteed on this page. More about camps on our Merzouga desert page.
